Monte Cengio

The Mt. Cengio stronghold, dominating the mid-Leogra valley, was one of the strong points of the Ortogonale 2 defensive line.
Due to its strategic position, it was equipped with small- and medium- caliber artillery stations, located on Mt. Sindio, positioned along a narrow rocky crest overhanging the Leogra valley and the Riolo Pass.

The four artillery positions mounted 85mm cannons, all of them facing east, which could bomb the bottom of the valley near Torrebelvicino.
A road was built on the steep slope of the mountain to enable the transportation of the artillery pieces. This road presented six hairpin bends, supported by robust dry-stone walls, and it reached the top of Mt. Sindio (810 mt. AMSL). The bold construction was completed in 1918 by the 113th military unit of the combat engineers, who also digged two tunnels (40 and 10 meters long, respectively) in the final portion of the road.
