[vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/1″][vc_custom_heading heading_semantic=”h1″ text_size=”h1″]Passo Priabona[\/vc_custom_heading][vc_custom_heading]The strategic defensive lines[\/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text]During the first two years of the war the Priabona Pass didn\u2019t undergo any defensive or military road works. The scenario changed totally after the risk of invasion faced during the Strafexpedition in 1916; at that point, the strategic importance of the Agno – Leogra ridgeline became clear, and in 1917 the Command of the 1st Army designed a defensive line on the mountain crest. The line was called Ortogonale 1, started in Campogrosso, went through the Xon, Zovo and Priabona passes, then, via Torreselle, continued up to Monteviale, where it entered the entrenched field of Vicenza.<\/p>\n
Between the spring of 1917 and the fall of 1918, the Priabona Pass and the nearby hills were affected by important defensive and military road works. The Priabona Pass, as well as the Mucchione and the Torreselle Passes, was on the direction of an enemy attack from the east in the event of collapse of the Pasubio front (or later of the Piave line).<\/p>\n
The defensive system was based on three lines: the line of the plain at the foot of the hill; an intermediate line on the hillside, which included Mt. Piano, and the Ortogonale 1 strategic line on the crestline going from Mt. Grande to Mt. Pulgo.<\/p>\n
In this section of the line there are important machine-gun stations and 4 in-cave cannon stations built by the military Engineer Corps of the 1st Army on the Chiesa Vecchia hill, and occupied in 1918 by the British artillerymen.<\/p>\n
Were then built the communication roads for heavy traffic that went from the Faedo Plateau to the pass, and from the pass towards Mt. Pulgo-Torreselle, with a deviation in Contrada Porra to ensure the connection to the defence lines in Mt. Piano.<\/p>\n
The military works were carried out by the soldiers of the Centurie Lavoratori (workers centuries) and by a huge number of civilian workers – women, young people and men – thanks to whom the project could be completed in a short time.<\/p>\n
Unfortunately, there was no shortage of incidents; the most serious one took place on the evening of 24th October 1917, when the powder magazine in Contrada Porra exploded, killing 13 people.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
